This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

The messenger names Gideon’s strength while the LORD is already with him, before that strength has to prove itself.

You are met with presence before any proof of strength: the LORD is with you, and your capacity to prevail is named in the same sentence. Gideon’s name carries the image of a cutter-down, while the address sees one able to prevail. What is named in you is a capacity already seen in the LORD’s presence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that the LORD’s presence and a strong identity arrive only after you have overcome is undone here: both are spoken before the proof.

גִּבּוֹר

gibbor

GROWS FROM

גבר

g-b-r

To be strong, prevail, or overpower.

“mighty man” in this verse is gibbor. ⁨גִּבּוֹר⁩ (gibbor, mighty one) comes from ⁨גבר⁩ (g-b-r, to be strong or prevail). The root also describes prevailing that is not a moral victory, so the word names a capacity to prevail rather than a record of heroic achievement; beside “the LORD is with thee,” that capacity is named before it is proven.

ALSO GROWS

gavar: To prevail or grow strong.

גָּבַר

This verb shares the root of “mighty” and makes the word a capacity for prevailing, not merely a title.

gevurah: Might or strength.

גְּבוּרָה

This noun shows the same root naming strength itself, the capacity the address recognizes in Gideon.

גִּדְעוֹן

Gideon

GROWS FROM

גדע

g-d-ʿ

To cut down or hew.

Gideon’s name carries the nature of a cutter-down. The name and the address meet in a person oriented toward cutting through what constricts, with prevailing strength named alongside the LORD’s presence.

ALSO GROWS

gadaʿ: To cut down or hew.

גָּדַע

This verb gives the root’s basic action and illuminates the nature carried in Gideon’s name.

godeaʿ: One who cuts down or hews.

גֹּדֵעַ

This form describes the agent of the action, making the name’s image one of active cutting through.

The LORD’s presence accompanies a calling, so strength is named in relationship rather than as a self-made achievement.

And he said, Surely I will be with you, and this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.
Exodus 3:12 · SDVThe promise “I will be with thee” accompanies the sending and the work Moses is given.
Do not fear before their faces, for I am with you to snatch you out, declares the LORD.
Jeremiah 1:8 · SDVThe LORD’s presence is stated alongside the deliverance Jeremiah is called to carry.
Teaching them to guard all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you all the days, until the completion of the age. Amen.
Matthew 28:20 · SDVPresence accompanies the ongoing work of teaching, extending the pattern beyond a single calling.
And the waters grew mighty and multiplied greatly upon the earth, and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
Genesis 7:18 · SDV

The Hebrew verb translated “prevailed” shares the root of the word translated “mighty.” In Genesis it describes waters prevailing over the earth; here it names a person’s capacity to prevail, showing that the root speaks of force and outcome, not simply a flattering label.
