This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,

What constriction tries to keep silent becomes a direct address to the LORD.

The pressure is still real when the people cry to the LORD; the verse gives their distress a voice and a direction. A cry does not pretend the trouble is gone: it brings the trouble into address.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a cry only matters after the pressure has passed; here the cry rises from within the trouble.

זָעֲקוּ

za'aqu

GROWS FROM

זעק

to cry out; make an urgent cry

The Hebrew verb shares its consonants with ⁨זְעָקָה⁩, the word for a cry or outcry. English gives the act as “cried,” while the root family holds the act and the voiced appeal together: distress is made audible and addressed.

ALSO GROWS

ze'aqah: cry, outcry

זְעָקָה

The noun from the same root names the voiced appeal contained in the act of crying.

yiz'aq: he cries out

יִזְעַק

This verb form carries the same root into an ongoing cry, showing the shared seed across forms.

Pressure does not stay mute: it becomes a cry directed toward God.

And in those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel groaned from the labor, and they cried out, and their outcry rose up to God from the labor.
Exodus 2:23 · SDVThe bondage is named, and the same ⁨זעק⁩ root marks the cry that rises to God.
Then they cry out to the LORD in their narrowness, and he snatches them out of their narrow places.
Psalm 107:6 · SDVTrouble becomes a cry to the LORD, followed by deliverance from distress.
When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have compassion on me.
Mark 10:47 · SDVA person’s need becomes an audible cry addressed to Jesus.
And in those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel groaned from the labor, and they cried out, and their outcry rose up to God from the labor.
Exodus 2:23 · SDV

Exodus 2:23 uses the same root, ⁨זעק⁩, for “they cried,” then says the cry comes up to God. That shared seed opens Judges’ brief clause: pressure becomes a voiced address, even before the answer is described.
