King James wording
King James Version
And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.THE KEY
The Hebrew רֹאשׁ (rosh, “head” and “chief”) makes the rulers’ severed heads a physical image of their authority falling.
THE MEANING
You see the pursuit continue until Oreb and Zeeb are killed and their heads are brought to Gideon. The verse makes the defeat visible and concrete: the rulers themselves are delivered to the one leading the pursuit.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the idea that an enemy’s flight means its command has already ended; here the pursuit continues until its leaders are brought into view.
THE ROOT
רָאשֵׁי
rāšê
GROWS FROM
ראשׁ
רֹאשׁ (rosh) means “head,” and extends to “chief,” “top,” or “first.”
The word for the heads brought to Gideon comes from רֹאשׁ (rosh, “head; chief”). That same word can name a body part or a leader, so the severed heads of Oreb (עֹרֵב, ʿōrēv, “raven”) and Zeeb (זְאֵב, zeʾēv, “wolf”) make the fall of their authority bodily visible.
ALSO GROWS
head: רֹאשׁ (rosh) means “head,” the upper part of the body.
The verse uses the physical sense as the pursuers bring the rulers’ heads to Gideon.
chief: רֹאשׁ (rosh) also means “chief” or “leader.”
This sense echoes the verse’s description of Oreb and Zeeb as princes.
beginning: רֵאשִׁית (reshit) means “beginning” or “first.”
The root’s sense of what is foremost links bodily position with rank and precedence.
THE PATTERN
A defeated power becomes publicly unmistakable when its authority is exposed before witnesses.
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and stripped it from its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their mighty one was dead, they fled.He judges among the nations, filling them with corpses, and he shatters the heads over the wide land.Having stripped away the rulers and the authorities, he displayed them in the open, leading them in procession in him.THE THREAD
Benjamin is a wolf that tears; in the morning he devours the prey, and at evening he divides the spoil.Zeeb’s name is זְאֵב (zeʾēv, “wolf”), the same Hebrew word used here for wolf. The echo places the slain prince’s name beside Benjamin’s wolf image, while Genesis applies that image to Benjamin.
