This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

In Hebrew, bread (lechem) shares its consonants with the verb for fighting (lacham), so Gideon’s request places nourishment inside the language of battle.

Your pursuit can still be in motion while the people with you are faint; the need for bread is spoken in the middle of it, not after it is over. The verse lets bodily depletion and forward movement occupy the same moment.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that continuing forward means you or those beside you must be inexhaustible.

לֶחֶם

leḥem

GROWS FROM

ל־ח־ם

L-Ḥ-M

Bread or food as a noun; the same consonants also form a verb meaning to fight or wage war.

The Hebrew word for bread, lechem, shares its consonants with laḥam, “to fight.” That overlap does not prove one meaning derives from the other, but it lets this verse hold nourishment and conflict in the same sound-shape: bread is requested while the pursuit is underway.

ALSO GROWS

laḥam: Fight or wage war.

לָחַם

Its shared consonants place the requested bread inside the verse’s scene of conflict.

milḥāmāh: Battle or warfare.

מִלְחָמָה

This related word makes the sound-link between bread and battle especially vivid as Gideon asks for food during pursuit.

רֹדֵף

rōdēf

GROWS FROM

ר־ד־ף

R-D-F

To pursue, chase, or follow after.

“pursuing” in this verse is rōdēf. This is active pursuit, not merely being on the way. The same root appears when goodness and mercy “follow” the speaker in Psalm 23:6, carrying the force of pursuit even when what follows is good.

ALSO GROWS

rādaph: To pursue or chase.

רָדַף

It names the ongoing motion Gideon describes as he goes after the kings.

rōdfay: My pursuers, from the same root; used in Psalm 7:1.

רֹדְפַי

The root can name those being chased as well as the act of chasing, making pursuit a relationship between people rather than a passing detail.

Provision meets bodily depletion within the journey and sustains continued movement.

And the messenger of the LORD turned back a second time, and touched him, and said, "Rise and eat, for the road is too great for you."
1 Kings 19:7 · SDVFood is given because the journey exceeds what the exhausted traveler can carry without provision.
And they gave him a piece of pressed fig cake, and two clusters of pressed raisins. And when he had eaten, his breath returned to him, for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any of the waters, three days and three nights.
1 Samuel 30:12 · SDVFood and drink meet a man’s depletion in the midst of a pursuit and restore his strength.
Then Jesus called his disciples to himself and said, My insides turn toward the crowd, for they have remained with me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I will not send them away unfed, lest they come unstrung on the road.
Matthew 15:32 · SDVThe crowd’s continued journey and bodily hunger are held together, and their need for food is spoken aloud.
And wine that gladdens the heart of a frail one, and oil to make his face shine, and bread that holds up the heart of a frail one.
Psalm 104:15 · SDV

Psalm names bread as what strengthens the heart; Judges shows bread requested because the people are faint. The shared Hebrew word lechem lets the ordinary loaf carry bodily support into the middle of pursuit.
