What Does 1 Chronicles 11:18 Mean in the King James?
And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,

THE KEY
At Bethlehem, the house of bread, water won through a breach becomes a libation: David returns the gift when he sees its cost.
THE MEANING
When a gift arrives with the risk behind it still visible, its meaning exceeds its use. David receives the water but does not claim it for himself; he pours it out to the LORD, marking it as an offering.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Receiving something does not make it yours to consume; the water is returned to the LORD when its cost is seen.
THE ROOT
נסך
nasak
GROWS FROM
נסך
To pour out, especially as a libation; also to cast by pouring.
“poured it out” in this verse is nasak. The verb for David’s act is also the root of nesekh, a drink offering: the water is not merely discarded but poured as an offering. The same root can describe metal poured into a mold, carrying the sense of a deliberate act that gives the poured substance a form or purpose.
ALSO GROWS
nesekh: A libation or drink offering.
נֶסֶךְ
Genesis 35:14 uses this offering word for what is poured out before the LORD, making the ritual connection in David’s act visible.
massekah: A cast image, formed by pouring metal.
מַסֵּכָה
This branch keeps the root’s concrete sense of pouring into a deliberate form beside its use for an offering.
בקע
baqaʿ
GROWS FROM
בקע
To split, cleave open, or break through.
“brake through” in this verse is baqaʿ. The men do not simply pass the Philistine host; the Hebrew verb pictures an opening made through what blocks the way. The same root describes the sea being split and light breaking forth, linking this breach to the opening of a path.
ALSO GROWS
bāqaʿ: To split or divide.
בָּקַע
Exodus 14:16 uses this root when the waters are divided, an opening through an obstruction.
yibaqaʿ: Will break forth.
יִבָּקַע
Isaiah 58:8 uses this root for light breaking forth like the morning, showing the same image of an opening made through.
שאב
sha’av
GROWS FROM
שאב
To draw water from a well or other source.
“drew water” in this verse is sha’av. The water is drawn from a well and carried across the breach the men have made; its source and the danger of retrieving it stay joined in the scene. Isaiah uses the same water-drawing verb beside the wells of deliverance, letting this literal act also suggest drawing from a life-giving source.
ALSO GROWS
sho’ev: A water-drawer.
שֹׁאֵב
Deuteronomy 29:11 uses this word for the drawer of water, the person defined by drawing from a shared source.
sha’av: To draw water.
שָׁאַב
Isaiah 12:3 uses the same verb for drawing water from the wells of deliverance, extending the well image beyond thirst.
THE PATTERN
What is placed before the LORD can be pictured as poured out rather than consumed.
And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.THE THREAD
And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. The verb for David pouring out the water shares its Hebrew root with the drink offering poured out here. That shared root reveals the action as libation language: the water becomes an offering.
