And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew says Uzza “sent” his hand toward the ark, using a root that also means “release”, a motion English’s “put” conceals.
THE MEANING
This verse sets a severe boundary before the reader: a hand reaches toward the ark, the LORD’s anger burns, and death follows. It holds divine anger and human death together without softening the violence or giving an explanation beyond the touch.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the assumption that closeness to the sacred guarantees safety: here, contact with the ark ends in death.
THE ROOT
שָׁלַח
shalach
GROWS FROM
שלח
Send forth, dispatch, send away, release; here, send out a hand toward something.
“put his hand” in this verse is shalach. The Hebrew describes Uzza as having “sent” his hand toward the ark. The same root can describe sending someone away or releasing them, so the plain English “put” hides the verb’s wider movement of extending and letting go.
ALSO GROWS
shilleach: Send away, dismiss, release.
שִׁלֵּחַ
This form makes the root’s sense of release explicit, a meaning hidden when the verse’s verb is rendered “put.”
shaluach: Sent, dispatched.
שָׁלוּחַ
The hand in this verse is described through the same root that names something sent forth.
shaliach: Messenger, one who is sent.
שְׁלִיחַ
The messenger carries the root’s central motion: being sent outward.
THE PATTERN
Scripture presents approach to the divine presence as a boundary with real consequences.
And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace. For our God is a consuming fire.THE THREAD
And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. In Chronicles, Uzza’s hand is “sent” toward the ark; in Exodus, the same root names the release of a people. The shared verb connects the hand’s outward motion here with scripture’s language of letting go.
