What Does 1 Chronicles 18:13 Mean in the King James?
And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became David’s servants. Thus the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse joins the LORD’s deliverance of David to Edom’s subjection, placing protection and conquest in the same line.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks now in a stark pairing: David (דָּוִד, Dāwîḏ, “beloved”) is delivered wherever he goes, while Edom (אֱדוֹם, ʾĔḏōm, “red”) is subdued under his rule. For you now, its claim is that deliverance reaches across the whole course of going. The garrisons and Edom’s subjection remain visible beside that claim.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that divine deliverance means no one is conquered is undone here: David is delivered while Edom becomes subject to him.
THE ROOT
וַיּוֹשַׁע
wayyōshaʿ
GROWS FROM
ישע
To deliver or rescue, bringing someone through danger into safety.
Here the LORD is the one who delivers David, and the protection extends through the whole range of his going. The same word-family names deliverance itself, so “preserved” carries the sense of active rescue through constriction into safety.
ALSO GROWS
yeshuah: Deliverance
יְשׁוּעָה
The noun names the rescue that the verb describes happening to David.
moshia: Deliverer
מוֹשִׁיעַ
This branch names the one who performs the rescue; in this verse, that role belongs to the LORD.
עֲבָדִים
ʿăvādîm
GROWS FROM
עבד
To work or serve; the noun can describe those who serve under another’s authority.
“servants” in this verse is ʿăvādîm. The root connects service with labor, making Edom’s position under David a concrete relation of subjection. David’s deliverance is narrated beside a people made to serve him, keeping the cost and structure of power in view.
ALSO GROWS
avad: To work or serve
עָבַד
The verb shows the action at the root of the status described by “servants.”
avodah: Work or service
עֲבֹדָה
This noun keeps the laboring sense inside the word-family used for Edom’s service.
THE PATTERN
Deliverance accompanies movement through real danger; it does not wait for the danger to disappear.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;THE THREAD
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.“Saved” in this verse comes from the same ישע (yasha) root as “preserved” in 1 Chronicles 18:13. David names that same deliverance in the presence of enemies, making the LORD’s protection here an active rescue through opposition.
