What Does 1 Chronicles 22:8 Mean in the King James?
But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.

THE KEY
A house built for God’s name must carry God’s nature, so the builder’s violence remains part of what the house would say.
THE MEANING
This word meets the reader with a hard boundary: bloodshed cannot be hidden beneath sacred ambition. The blood stands poured upon the earth in the LORD’s sight, and the hand that shed it is barred from building the house that bears God’s name. Here, שֵׁם (shem, name) carries the nature of the one named; the house remains possible, but its builder must be another.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A sacred purpose does not make the bloodshed used to pursue it disappear.
THE ROOT
שָׁפַכְתָּ
shafakhta
GROWS FROM
שפך
sh-p-kh
To pour out or spill, causing a liquid to flow out.
English “shed” can sound like a settled category of violence; the Hebrew verb is the concrete image of pouring out. The same verb describes the LORD pouring out breath in Joel 2:28, keeping the blood here bodily and visible: something living has flowed onto the earth before God.
ALSO GROWS
shefikhah: Pouring out; shedding
שְׁפִיכָה
The noun preserves the verb’s image: bloodshed is blood poured out.
eshpokh: I will pour out
אֶשְׁפּוֹךְ
This form appears with breath in Joel 2:28; the same root can describe breath poured forth or blood spilled.
לִבְנוֹת
livnot
GROWS FROM
בנה
b-n-h
To build or establish.
“build” in this verse is livnot. The root names the act of building and appears in words for a building or structure. Because this house is to bear שֵׁם (shem, name and the named one’s nature), the verse binds the builder’s blood-marked hands to the nature the house would display.
ALSO GROWS
binyan: Building; construction
בִּנְיָן
It names the built work that stands from the act of building.
mivneh: Structure; form
מִבְנֶה
It carries the same root into the form that building gives.
THE PATTERN
A dwelling for God’s name belongs to a world where violence gives way to peace.
But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent. And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.THE THREAD
Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.Genesis uses the same root שפך (sh-p-kh, pour out) for the one who sheds blood and for the blood shed in return. The root makes the connection direct: blood poured onto the earth has a human consequence, and the hands that poured it out remain in view.
