What Does 1 Chronicles 24:4 Mean in the King James?
And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.

THE KEY
The Hebrew word for “divided” also carries the sense of apportioning: the split assigns each house a share within the whole.
THE MEANING
The verse holds two different counts within one ordered arrangement: one house has sixteen chief men, the other eight, each counted according to its fathers’ house. Your place in a shared whole does not require the same measure as another’s; distinct shares can belong to one order.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that a shared order requires identical numbers is undone here: the houses remain within one division despite their unequal counts.
THE ROOT
וַיְחַלְּקוּם
vayechallequm
GROWS FROM
ח־ל־ק
ḥ-l-q
To divide or apportion, assigning shares.
The verb can hold both separation and allocation: the division gives each house its place within the arrangement. English “divided” can sound like a break, while the Hebrew root also opens onto the shares that make an ordered whole.
ALSO GROWS
cheleq: Portion, share.
חֵלֶק
This noun names a share within a whole, showing how dividing can assign a place rather than sever belonging.
machleqot: Divisions, courses or ordered groups.
מַחְלְקוֹת
In this chapter’s vocabulary, divisions are organized service groups; the root’s split becomes a way of arranging shared work.
THE PATTERN
A shared order can assign different measures while keeping each part within one whole.
To many thou shalt give the more inheritance, and to few thou shalt give the less inheritance: to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.THE THREAD
For the LORD’s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.“Portion” here is חֵלֶק (cheleq), from the same root as “divided” in 1 Chronicles 24:4. The shared root opens division as the assigning of a share within a whole: here, the people themselves are the LORD’s portion.
