What Does 1 Chronicles 29:23 Mean in the King James?
Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Even as king, Solomon occupies a throne that belongs to the LORD, and the people’s response is pictured as hearing him.
THE MEANING
The seat you hold remains within the LORD’s authority, even as you exercise it. Here, obedience carries the texture of hearing and response. Prosperity is forward movement within a received place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that authority makes its holder the source and owner of power dissolves here: Solomon is king, yet the throne remains the LORD’s.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ
wayyishme'u
GROWS FROM
שמע
To hear, listen, and heed.
“obeyed” in this verse is wayyishme'u. The verb carries the audible texture of hearing: Israel hears Solomon. His own request for a hearing heart makes listening reciprocal, not merely a direction of command.
ALSO GROWS
shama: To hear or listen.
שָׁמַע
The same root frames Israel’s response as listening to the king.
lev shomea: A heart that hears.
לֵב שֹׁמֵעַ
Solomon asks for this kind of heart in 1 Kings 3:9; the verse connects the ruler’s listening with the people’s response.
וַיַּצְלַח
wayyatslach
GROWS FROM
צלח
To advance, succeed, or come through.
“prospered” in this verse is wayyatslach. The word translated prosper belongs to a root that can describe forceful arrival as well as success. Its sense here reaches beyond settled comfort to movement forward.
ALSO GROWS
hitzliach: To cause a way or undertaking to advance.
הִצְלִיחַ
In Genesis 24:40 the root describes the LORD prospering a journey, so prosperity can be movement along a way.
wattitslach: Came forcefully upon.
וַתִּצְלַח
In Judges 14:6 this root describes the LORD’s breath (רוּחַ, ruach) coming mightily upon Samson, giving the word a sense of forceful arrival.
THE PATTERN
Authority is presented as received under the LORD’s rule, rather than originating in the person who holds it.
And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.THE THREAD
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?Solomon asks for a hearing heart; this verse depicts Israel as hearing him. The shared שמע root binds leadership and response into one movement of listening.
