What Does 1 Chronicles 7:29 Mean in the King James?
And by the borders of the children of Manasseh, Beth-shean and her towns, Taanach and her towns, Megiddo and her towns, Dor and her towns. In these dwelt the children of Joseph the son of Israel.

THE KEY
The text calls each city’s surrounding towns its “daughters,” turning a list of places into a picture of a household branching outward.
THE MEANING
The verse makes belonging visible as lived place: a family name is carried through named towns and the people dwelling there. Identity has edges and inhabitants here; it is not only ancestry.
THE ROOT
יָשְׁבוּ
yashvu
GROWS FROM
ישב
y-sh-b
to sit, settle, remain, dwell
The verb יָשְׁבוּ (yashvu, “they dwelt” or “settled”) comes from a root that also means to sit and remain. English makes “dwelt” sound like a location note; the Hebrew carries the sense of people settled into a place, while “her towns” preserves the image of each city’s daughters branching outward.
ALSO GROWS
yoshev: one who sits, remains, or dwells
יוֹשֵׁב
It names a person by settled presence, the human counterpart to these inhabited towns.
moshav: dwelling place, seat, settlement
מוֹשָׁב
The place of settled presence grows from the same root as dwelling, linking the people to the towns they inhabit.
THE PATTERN
A people’s belonging takes shape in the bounds and places they inhabit.
And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even three countries. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;THE THREAD
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. The verb translated “dwell” carries the same root, ישב (yashav, “sit” or “dwell”), as the word in this verse. Here Joseph’s descendants dwell in named towns; in the psalm, the same root opens onto dwelling in the house of the LORD.
