King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Even the name of Christ can become one more banner when shared belonging is divided into rival claims.
THE MEANING
The repeated “I am of…” gives four names the same frame, turning each into a boundary for belonging. Even “Christ” appears within that list, showing how a revered name can be spoken as a faction’s badge. The verse exposes the division in the way people name their allegiance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Claiming the right name does not, by itself, dissolve the division created by rival claims of belonging.
THE ROOT
Χριστοῦ
Christou
GROWS FROM
χρίω
chríō
To anoint, to apply oil.
Christ means “the anointed one,” not simply a personal name. Yet the same “I am of [name]” frame places this title among the factional claims, showing how even a name that points to anointing can be used as a banner.
ALSO GROWS
chríō: To anoint.
χρίω
The verb gives the title its sense: Christ is the one anointed.
chrísma: Anointing, or the anointing itself.
χρῖσμα
This related word keeps the title connected to the act and substance of anointing.
λέγει
legei
GROWS FROM
λεγ-
To say or speak.
Each person says the same kind of claim: “I am of…” The repeated speech gives different names an identical frame, making the spoken formula itself a clear sign of the division.
ALSO GROWS
logos: Word, account, or message.
λόγος
This related noun shows the same word-family extending from speaking into what is spoken.
lexis: Speech or wording.
λέξις
The wording matters here: the names change, but the phrasing of allegiance repeats.
THE PATTERN
When shared belonging is divided into claims under competing names, the community’s oneness is obscured.
A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.THE THREAD
Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? The next verse turns the claims in this verse into questions: can Christ be divided, and can Paul stand in Christ’s place? The questions expose the gap between saying “I am of” a name and belonging to the one who was crucified.
