This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

A demanded sign and a pursued wisdom are two different ways of asking reality to make itself legible.

You can recognize both movements in yourself: wanting a visible marker that confirms what is happening, and wanting an account that explains it. The verse places these as distinct ways of seeking what is real. It lets you see the different forms the search can take.

σημεῖον

sēmeion

GROWS FROM

σημ-

sēm-

A mark or signal that indicates something.

A sign is a marker that points beyond itself: evidence sought as an indication. Set beside wisdom, it reveals two ways of asking reality to become legible, through a visible sign or through an intelligible account.

ALSO GROWS

sēma: A sign or mark.

σῆμα

It shares the sign-family and makes the image concrete: something marked out to be noticed.

sēmainō: To indicate or signify.

σημαίνω

It shows the sign’s pointing function: a sign indicates something beyond itself.

ζητοῦσιν

zētousin

GROWS FROM

ζητ-

zēt-

To seek, search, or inquire.

“seek after” in this verse is zētousin. The verb describes an active pursuit: the Greeks are seeking wisdom, not simply possessing it. Beside the demand for a sign, it shows two different forms of reaching for an answer.

ALSO GROWS

zētēsis: A search or inquiry.

ζήτησις

It makes the investigative quality of seeking explicit.

zētētēs: A seeker or inquirer.

ζητητής

It names the person engaged in the pursuit expressed by the verse’s verb.

σοφία

sophia

GROWS FROM

σοφ-

soph-

Wisdom or skillful understanding.

Here wisdom is what the Greeks actively pursue: an account that makes reality intelligible. Its word-family includes the wise or skilled person, so the pursuit concerns a way of understanding, not just a clever answer.

ALSO GROWS

sophos: Wise or skilled.

σοφός

It names the person characterized by the understanding sought in the verse.

sophizō: To make wise; to devise cleverly.

σοφίζω

It shows the word-family’s range from cultivated understanding to clever devising.

People reach toward what is uncertain through forms of confirmation their way of knowing can recognize.

And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
Judges 6:17 · KJVA visible sign is requested as confirmation that the encounter is real.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
1 Kings 3:9 · KJVUnderstanding is sought as the capacity to discern what is true and right.
Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
Matthew 12:38 · KJVThe desire for visible confirmation is spoken directly as a request to see a sign.
Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
Matthew 12:38 · KJV

The same Greek noun, ⁨σημεῖον⁩ (sēmeion), appears here as in the word translated “sign” in 1 Corinthians. Here the desire is voiced outright, “we would see a sign”, so the compressed phrase opens into a recognizable wish for visible confirmation.
