Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

THE KEY
The Greek behind “diversities” also means distributions: the many forms of favor are portions held together by one Breath.
THE MEANING
The gifts are many, and the Breath behind them is one. The forms of favor present in your life need not match one another to share that source.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that difference means disconnection: distinct gifts can share one source.
THE ROOT
διαιρέσεις
diaireseis
GROWS FROM
διαιρέω
diaireō
To divide, apportion, or distribute.
The noun rendered “diversities” can carry the sense of distribution or apportioning. In verse 11, the same word family names what the one Breath does, distributes to each, so difference reads as an allocation within unity, not a fracture of it.
ALSO GROWS
diaireō: To divide, distribute, or apportion.
διαιρέω
It shows that the variety can be understood as portions distributed from one source.
diairoun: Distributing or dividing; the participle used in 1 Corinthians 12:11.
διαιροῦν
It links the diversity in this verse to the one Breath’s act of distributing to each person.
πνεῦμα
pneuma
GROWS FROM
πνέω
pneō
To breathe or blow; to set air in motion.
The word rendered “Spirit” also carries the sense of breath and wind, and comes from πνέω (pneō), “to breathe or blow.” The verse names its unity with a word of living Breath: the expressions differ, while their animating source remains one.
ALSO GROWS
pneō: To breathe or blow.
πνέω
This verbal root lies beneath the word for Breath that holds the many gifts together.
pnoē: Breath or a blowing.
πνοή
It shares the breath-and-wind language that opens up the meaning of πνεῦμα.
pneuma: Breath or wind; the animating Breath.
πνεῦμα
This is the word in the verse, naming the one source alongside the many gifts.
χαρισμάτων
charismatōn
GROWS FROM
χάρις
charis
Favor or goodwill freely shown.
The word rendered “gifts” is built on χάρις (charis), “favor”; a χάρισμα (charisma) is a concrete expression of that favor. The many gifts are thus held together as favor taking different forms.
ALSO GROWS
charis: Favor or goodwill freely shown.
χάρις
It is the root that ties the gifts to favor.
charisma: A gift or expression of favor.
χάρισμα
It names each gift as a form favor takes.
charizomai: To grant freely, show favor, or forgive.
χαρίζομαι
It shows the root’s movement from favor received to favor freely given.
THE PATTERN
One Breath gives distinct gifts as different forms of the same favor.
And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.THE THREAD
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. The Greek noun διαιρέσεις (diaireseis, “distributions”) in verse 4 and the participle διαιροῦν (diairoun, “distributing”) in verse 11 share the root διαιρέω (diaireō, “to divide or distribute”). Verse 11 makes explicit that the one Breath distributes the many forms to each person.
