What Does 1 Corinthians 14:19 Mean in the King James?
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

THE KEY
Speech becomes a gift when its meaning reaches another person.
THE MEANING
In the assembly now, speech serves others when its meaning reaches them. A few words spoken with understanding can teach, while a vast stream in a language the hearers cannot understand leaves them outside the meaning. The value lies in the shared grasp that makes learning possible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that more words or more mysterious-sounding speech automatically carry more value: if hearers cannot understand, the speech cannot teach them.
THE ROOT
κατηχήσω
katēchēsō
GROWS FROM
κατηχέω
katēcheō
To teach or instruct orally; the verb is formed from κατά (kata, down) and ἠχέω (ēcheō, to sound or resound).
“teach” in this verse is katēchēsō. The verb carries the image of sound reaching someone as instruction. Five words matter because their sound arrives as teaching in another mind; sheer volume in a tongue the hearers cannot follow has no such arrival.
ALSO GROWS
katēchoumenos: One who is being taught or instructed.
κατηχούμενος
This is the same verb in Galatians 6:6, where the person being taught shares with the one who teaches.
katēchēsis: Instruction or oral teaching; the source of the English word “catechesis.”
κατήχησις
It keeps the root’s link between spoken words and instruction.
νοΐ
noi
GROWS FROM
νοῦς
nous
Mind, perception, the faculty that grasps meaning.
The word behind “understanding” is the mind itself: speech with understanding carries a grasp of meaning, not merely sound. The verse links that grasp with teaching, so another person’s mind can receive what the speaker has comprehended.
ALSO GROWS
noeō: To perceive, understand, or consider.
νοέω
This related verb shows the same mind-root at work in grasping what words mean.
dianoia: Thought, mind, or understanding.
διάνοια
It extends the mind-root into the thinking that intelligible speech can reach.
THE PATTERN
Words serve others when their meaning reaches the hearer.
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?THE THREAD
Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. The Greek verb κατηχέω (katēcheō, to teach orally) appears in both verses: here as “teach,” and there as “is taught” and “teacheth.” Galatians makes visible the exchange that clear teaching enables: the one taught shares with the one teaching.
