THE KEY
The same Greek verb stands behind “subdued,” “subject,” and “put ... under,” carrying one repeated act of subordination toward the end that God may be all in all.
THE MEANING
The verse gives the reader a horizon in which all things are brought under the Son, and the Son himself is subject to the one who places all things under him. The purpose is that God may be all in all.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the assumption that the Son stands above everything without himself being subject to anyone: it places him under the one who placed all things under him.
THE ROOT
ὑποταγῇ
hypotagē
GROWS FROM
τάσσω
tassō
Arrange, set in order, appoint; in the compound ὑποτάσσω, place under or subject.
Greek repeats forms of ὑποτάσσω behind “subdued,” “subject,” and “put ... under,” while English gives the repeated action different expressions. The same τάσσω family appears earlier in the chapter as τάγμα, “order,” connecting the final subjection with the chapter’s language of appointed order.
ALSO GROWS
hypotassō: Place under; subject.
ὑποτάσσω
This compound verb is repeated across the verse, placing all things under the Son and the Son under the one who placed all things beneath him.
tagma: An appointed order or rank.
τάγμα
This word appears in verse 23 as “order,” linking the chapter’s appointed sequence to the subordination described at its close.
THE PATTERN
Scripture pictures authority as an order in which all things are placed under the appointed ruler.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.THE THREAD
But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.“Order” translates τάγμα, from the same τάσσω family as the repeated subjection verb in verse 28. Read together, the chapter connects resurrection and subjection through the language of appointed placement.
