What Does 1 Corinthians 15:48 Mean in the King James?
As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

THE KEY
What looks like a contrast between two kinds of people is also a law of likeness: each bears the nature of its source.
THE MEANING
You know the earth-shaped condition: a body formed from earth and subject to its limits. The verse places beside it a heavenly likeness, so human life is described by two forms that share the nature of their source. What you can see of yourself now does not exhaust the horizon the verse gives.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that your dust-shaped nature exhausts what you can bear; the verse holds a heavenly likeness alongside it.
THE ROOT
χοϊκός
choikos
GROWS FROM
χοῦς
choos
Dust, loose earth.
The word translated “earthy” grows from the word for dust, carrying the dust-formed human within it. English can make “earthy” sound like a temperament; the Greek keeps the material source in view.
ALSO GROWS
choos: Dust.
χοῦς
This is the dust from which the human is formed in Genesis 2:7, making the earthy likeness bodily and specific.
choikos: Made of dust; earthy.
χοϊκός
This is the word Paul uses for the one whose likeness is shared by those who are earthy.
ἐπουράνιος
epouranios
GROWS FROM
οὐραν-
ouran-
Heaven, sky.
“heavenly” in this verse is epouranios. The word names what belongs to heaven, from the same stem as the Greek word for heaven itself. Set opposite the dust-rooted earthy, it gives the verse a matching pair: each likeness carries the nature of its realm.
ALSO GROWS
ouranos: Heaven; sky.
οὐρανός
This is the source word inside the heavenly term, anchoring the likeness in heaven.
ouranios: Heavenly; belonging to heaven.
οὐράνιος
This related form makes the connection between the realm and the nature that belongs to it explicit.
THE PATTERN
A life bears the likeness of the source or realm to which it belongs.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.THE THREAD
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. The Greek word translated “earthy” is formed from χοῦς, “dust,” the same noun used in the Greek text of Genesis 2:7 for the dust from which the human is formed. Paul’s earthy likeness therefore carries the dust-formed human within it, set beside the one who belongs to heaven.
