What Does 1 Corinthians 3:4 Mean in the King James?
For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse exposes factional loyalty as flesh shaping belonging: the claim of ownership turns shared life into rival camps.
THE MEANING
Whenever you say, “I belong to this person,” belonging tightens around a human name and starts sorting people into camps. The verse names this divided allegiance as a flesh-shaped way of being, where identity follows preference and status instead of shared life. The split is visible in the repeated claim: one is of Paul, another of Apollos.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie it undoes is that choosing a side proves spiritual maturity or loyalty. Here, the need to claim a leader as “mine” exposes belonging narrowed by rivalry.
THE ROOT
σαρκικοί
sarkikoi
GROWS FROM
σάρξ (sarx), stem σαρκ- (sark-)
Flesh; embodied human life, and by extension a life shaped by the flesh.
“carnal” in this verse is sarkikoi. The Greek adjective σαρκικοί (sarkikoi) grows from σάρξ (sarx), “flesh.” It names more than bodily material: it describes a flesh-shaped way of being, so the division is rooted in how belonging is governed. The root also catches the rival identity-making between people, not only private appetite.
ALSO GROWS
sarx: Flesh; embodied human life.
σάρξ
This is the seed of the word in the verse, joining physical life with the figurative idea of a flesh-shaped orientation.
sarkikos: Fleshly; shaped or governed by the flesh.
σαρκικός
This is the form used in the verse, naming factional allegiance as a way of being.
sarkinos: Made of flesh; fleshly.
σάρκινος
This related form shows the root can describe what something is made of, while sarkikos describes a flesh-shaped quality or orientation.
THE PATTERN
Self-assertion and desire turn shared life into contention and rivalry.
Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?THE THREAD
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.“Flesh” here shares the root σάρξ (sarx) with “carnal” in the current verse. Romans shows that the flesh shapes what occupies the mind; here, that same orientation appears in the names people organize their belonging around.
