What Does 1 John 2:8 Mean in the King James?
Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The light does not wait for darkness to finish passing; it is already shining as the darkness passes.
THE MEANING
The command to love is true in Jesus and in you, alive within you now. Darkness is passing, and the true light already shines. The change is in motion even before the darkness has fully vanished.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that light can be present only after every trace of darkness has disappeared.
THE ROOT
παράγεται
paragetai
GROWS FROM
παράγω (paragō), from παρά (para) + ἄγω (agō)
To pass by or along; παρά (para) means by or alongside, and ἄγω (agō) means lead or bring.
“is past” in this verse is paragetai. The Greek verb is present tense: the darkness is passing by now. The verse holds that ongoing movement beside the light that already shines.
ALSO GROWS
agō: Lead, bring
ἄγω
This base verb gives the compound its sense of movement: darkness is passing along, not described as a permanent state.
paragōn: Passing by
παράγων
John 9:1 uses this form when Jesus passes by a man, making the verb’s movement concrete.
φαίνει
phainei
GROWS FROM
φαν (phan), from φαίνω (phainō)
To appear, become visible, or shine.
The word rendered “shineth” also carries the sense of appearing or becoming visible. The true light is already coming into view within the reader, even while darkness is passing.
ALSO GROWS
phaneros: Visible, manifest
φανερός
This branch names what has come into view; the light is not merely promised but visible.
phaneroō: Make visible, reveal
φανερόω
This branch shows the same root’s movement from appearing to being revealed.
THE PATTERN
The light is already shining within the passage of darkness, making darkness a movement rather than a final condition.
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.THE THREAD
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.John 1:5 uses the same Greek verb, φαίνω (phainō), meaning appear or shine, for light shining in darkness. Here, that same light shines now as darkness passes, so its appearing is already underway within the darkness.
