THE KEY
Jerusalem and Abishalom both carry the root of wholeness, placing the reign between a city and a maternal lineage marked by the same word-family.
THE MEANING
Power in your life is never abstract: it takes place somewhere and moves through visible relationships and inheritances. Here, Jerusalem and Abishalom both carry the language of wholeness, though the verse does not say whether the reign itself embodies it.
THE ROOT
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שלם
To be whole or complete; to bring into wholeness.
Jerusalem carries the שָׁלוֹם (shalom, wholeness) word-family, with the dual ending -ayim. The maternal line echoes it in אֲבִי־שָׁלוֹם (avi-shalom, father of wholeness), so place and ancestry share a root in the verse without declaring the reign itself whole.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, completeness
שָׁלוֹם
This is the word-family heard in Jerusalem and the name Abishalom.
avi-shalom: Father of wholeness
אֲבִי־שָׁלוֹם
The mother’s father carries the same root in his name.
shalem: Whole, complete
שָׁלֵם
This form makes the root’s sense of wholeness visible beneath both names.
מָלַךְ
malakh
GROWS FROM
מלך
To rule as king.
“reigned” in this verse is malakh. The verb for reigning belongs to the same root-family as the Hebrew word for king and the word for kingdom. Hebrew holds the action of ruling, the ruler, and the realm together in one seed.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: King
מֶלֶךְ
The person who rules is named from the same root as the act of reigning.
mamlakhah: Kingdom, realm
מַמְלָכָה
The realm also grows from the root that names the act of rule.
THE PATTERN
Scripture lets a name disclose something of a person’s nature or calling, so names carry meaning within the story.
Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.THE THREAD
To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;Hebrews identifies Salem (שָׁלֵם, shalem: wholeness) with shalom (שָׁלוֹם, wholeness), making explicit the word-family heard in Jerusalem and Abishalom. This lets the city and maternal lineage sound together under wholeness while leaving the quality of the reign open.
