What Does 1 Kings 16:24 Mean in the King James?
And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver, and built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill, Samaria.

THE KEY
Samaria’s Hebrew name preserves Shemer in its sound, and their shared root שמר lets the city built on his hill carry the sense of guarding as well as his ownership.
THE MEANING
A place can be newly built while its name still carries the identity of the one who owned its ground. In Hebrew, Shemer and Shomron echo שמר, “guard, keep, watch,” so the city’s name gathers watchfulness around the hill and its former owner.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A new building completely erases the identity that came before it.
THE ROOT
שֹׁמְרוֹן
Shomron
GROWS FROM
שמר
To guard, keep, or watch.
“Samaria / Shemer” in this verse is Shomron. The verse says the city is named after Shemer, and the Hebrew names share the consonants שמר. English hides the echo: the city built on Shemer’s hill carries his name and the sound of guarding or keeping.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: One who guards or keeps watch.
שׁוֹמֵר
This branch makes the watchfulness heard in Shomron concrete: its name can be heard alongside the person who keeps watch.
mishmeret: A watch, duty, or keeping.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
The hill’s ownership gives the city’s naming an added shade of keeping and custody.
THE PATTERN
A name gathers a place’s defining relationship or encounter into its identity.
And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first. So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.THE THREAD
For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the LORD our God.The Hebrew word for “watchmen,” שֹׁמְרִים (shomrim, watchers), comes from the same root שמר heard in Shemer and Shomron. The shared sound opens the city’s name toward its deeper sense of guarding, set here on a hill.
