What Does 1 Kings 17:12 Mean in the King James?
And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

THE KEY
The same Hebrew verb names these two sticks and the stubble gathered when straw is withheld, making survival here a matter of what can still be picked up.
THE MEANING
You see the shortage measured out: a palmful of meal, a little oil, two sticks, and the expectation that death follows the meal. The verse states that expectation plainly before any continuation is visible.
THE ROOT
מְקֹשֶׁשֶׁת
məqōšéšet
GROWS FROM
קשש
to gather or pick up sticks and stubble
In Exodus 5:7 and 5:12, this same root describes gathering straw or stubble after straw is withheld. Here it describes gathering two sticks for a meal she expects to be her last, giving scarcity the physical shape of what can still be picked up.
ALSO GROWS
ləqōshēsh: To gather stubble, as in Exodus 5:12.
לְקֹשֵׁשׁ
The same verb places the widow’s gathering beside the labor of collecting what remains when straw is withheld.
wəqōshəshū: To gather straw, as in Exodus 5:7.
וְקֹשְׁשׁוּ
This form shares the root’s consonants and echoes the verse’s image of gathering a bare necessity by hand.
THE PATTERN
A scarce remainder is named precisely before scripture reveals what it can sustain.
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.THE THREAD
So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. The Hebrew verb לְקֹשֵׁשׁ (ləqōshēsh, to gather) here comes from the same root קשש (qāshash, gather) as the widow’s מְקֹשֶׁשֶׁת (məqōšéšet, gathering). The echo binds gathering stubble when straw is withheld to gathering two sticks for a last meal: survival narrows to what can still be picked up.
