What Does 1 Kings 17:16 Mean in the King James?
And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

THE KEY
The oil “does not fail” is described as not becoming deficient, the same Hebrew root used when floodwaters “abate,” so here scarcity does not arrive.
THE MEANING
The meal does not reach its end, and the oil does not become deficient: need appears, but it does not get the final word. This speaks now to the place where you see only a small measure: provision can be real as continuing sufficiency, even when it does not look like surplus.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a small measure already proves coming failure: the jar can remain small while lack does not arrive.
THE ROOT
חָסֵר
ḥāsēr
GROWS FROM
ח־ס־ר
ḥ-s-r
To lack, be deficient, or diminish.
The Hebrew says the oil did not become deficient. This root also describes waters diminishing, so “fail” here carries the more specific sense of lack or decrease: the supply does not move into shortage.
ALSO GROWS
maḥsor: Need, want, or deficiency
מַחְסוֹר
This noun names the shortfall the verse says never takes hold of the oil.
vayyaḥseru: They diminished; they became less
וַיַּחְסְרוּ
This form from the same root describes the floodwaters abating in Genesis 8:3, revealing the decrease that the oil in this verse does not undergo.
THE PATTERN
Provision is shown when need is met and lack is held back, even before the supply looks abundant.
And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating. And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.THE THREAD
And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.“Were abated” and “fail” come from the Hebrew root חסר (ḥ-s-r), meaning to diminish or be lacking. The waters decrease in Genesis; here, the oil does not become deficient.
