What Does 1 Kings 18:23 Mean in the King James?
Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Both offerings are prepared with fire withheld, so the test turns on who answers, not who prepares.
THE MEANING
The scene holds your attention on what can be arranged and what cannot be supplied: both sides choose and prepare an offering, but neither provides fire. The missing fire leaves the source of any answer exposed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Preparation alone does not produce the answer.
THE ROOT
וְנָתַתִּי
venatatti
GROWS FROM
נתן
Give, set, or place
The KJV uses “give” for the bulls and “lay” for Elijah’s bullock, but both actions come from נתן. Placing the offering on the wood is expressed as giving it over to the altar.
ALSO GROWS
give: Hand over or provide
The two bullocks are given into the test before either is placed on the wood.
place: Set something in a position
Elijah’s “lay” is also נתן, linking the offering’s placement with its being given over.
יָשִׂימוּ
yasimu
GROWS FROM
שים
Put, set, or place
“put” in this verse is yasimu. The same root describes placing the animal on the wood and refusing to place fire there. The repeated verb makes the withholding part of the setup itself: the offering is set, while fire is deliberately left unset.
ALSO GROWS
lay: Set or place
The prophets are told to put their bullock on the wood.
put: Place or set
The same root is repeated in the command that neither side put fire beneath the offering.
וִינַתְּחֻהוּ
vinatechuhu
GROWS FROM
נתח
Cut into pieces
“cut it in pieces” in this verse is vinatechuhu. The bullock is divided before it meets the wood, making the cutting part of the shared preparation rather than the answering act. This same root returns when Elijah stages his offering, carrying the test’s symmetry forward.
ALSO GROWS
cut up: Divide into portions
The prophets cut their bullock before placing it on the wood.
pieces: The portions made by cutting
The related noun for pieces names the divided offering that appears in the altar instructions.
THE PATTERN
When fire marks a divine answer, it arrives beyond the human preparation that arranges the offering.
And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.THE THREAD
And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. The same language of cutting and placing returns when Elijah prepares his side of the test, showing that the symmetry of verse 23 is carried through in the actual staging. The difference emerges after the preparation is complete and the fire remains withheld.
