THE KEY
The road is a path being walked: דֶּרֶךְ (derekh, “way”) shares its root with “to tread,” so Obadiah meets Elijah while the journey is still underway.
THE MEANING
A meeting can arrive while you are already on the way; movement does not keep recognition from finding you. Here the bow comes before the question, so the body responds while speech still seeks confirmation. The encounter holds recognition and uncertainty at once.
THE ROOT
בַּדֶּרֶךְ
baderekh
GROWS FROM
דרך
דרך (d-r-k; dāraḵ) means “to tread” or “step”; דֶּרֶךְ (derekh) means “road,” “way,” or “course.”
In בַּדֶּרֶךְ (baderekh, “in the way”), the root link between road and treading makes the setting active. Elijah meets Obadiah while a path is being walked, so the encounter interrupts motion without ending the journey.
ALSO GROWS
dārakh: To tread, step, or march.
דָּרַךְ
This verb shares the root consonants and makes explicit the movement held inside “way.”
dōrēkh: One treading; a treader.
דֹּרֵךְ
This form keeps the same root and names the person moving along the path.
THE PATTERN
The way becomes a place of encounter: recognition arrives while movement is still underway.
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.THE THREAD
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. The Hebrew word for “ways” here also comes from דרך (derekh, “way”), the root behind the road in this verse. The shared root opens the encounter as something met within an ongoing course, while Proverbs extends the image across all the ways a life takes.
