This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

His yes does not open the boundary; it becomes a life spent within it.

A spoken yes becomes a life measured by where it remains. Shimei calls the king’s saying good, then dwells in Jerusalem many days; his assent takes form as staying within the boundary set around him. Jerusalem bears the name of wholeness, even as this verse makes it the edge of his permitted movement.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A verbal yes does not dissolve the conditions it accepts.

וַיֵּשֶׁב

vayyēshev

GROWS FROM

ישב

To sit, remain, or dwell.

“dwelt” in this verse is vayyēshev. Yashav can mean sit as well as dwell, so the verse does not picture a passing promise; it shows Shimei staying put. “Many days” turns assent into duration: his life is located inside the limit he has accepted.

ALSO GROWS

yoshēv: One who sits or dwells.

יֹשֵׁב

The same root makes dwelling a continued presence, not a momentary arrival.

moshav: A dwelling, seat, or settlement.

מוֹשָׁב

It echoes the verse’s emphasis on the place where Shimei remains.

הַדָּבָר

hadāvar

GROWS FROM

דבר

To speak; a word, matter, or affair.

This root joins the spoken word to the matter at hand. The verse moves from Shimei calling the saying good to a life shaped by what that saying entails.

ALSO GROWS

dibber: He spoke or uttered.

דִּבֵּר

The king’s spoken terms are what Shimei accepts.

devarim: Words, matters, or affairs.

דְּבָרִים

The root lets speech shade into the concrete matter that follows from it.

בִּירוּשָׁלַ

biYərūšālayim

GROWS FROM

שלם

Wholeness or completeness.

“Jerusalem” in this verse is biYərūšālayim. Yerushalayim carries shalom, wholeness, in its dual ending: the two wholenesses. Here, that city of wholeness is also the perimeter of Shimei’s permitted life, holding wholeness beside restricted movement.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness, well-being, or peace.

שָׁלוֹם

It brings the city’s name into the verse as more than a location.

shalem: Whole or complete.

שָׁלֵם

This branch makes the name’s resonance with wholeness visible beside the boundary Shimei inhabits.

An assent becomes visible in the life that follows its words.

Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.
Deuteronomy 5:27 · KJVThe promise to hear is joined to doing, making response more than verbal agreement.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 7:21 · KJVThe verse distinguishes saying from doing and measures the words by the life that enacts them.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
James 1:22 · KJVReceiving the word takes form in practice; hearing by itself is not its fulfillment.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11 · KJV

Both verses use davar for word and matter. Isaiah shows the word accomplishing its work; here, Shimei’s spoken assent takes visible shape in where he remains.
