This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

A routed army and an escaping king occupy the same moment: pursuit does not equal capture.

You watch two outcomes unfold at once: Israel strikes and pursues, while Ben-hadad gets away on horseback with his horsemen. The army is in flight, but its king is not captured; the verse keeps pursuit and escape in the same frame.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a rout means the opposing leader is already in your hands. Here the Syrians flee, yet Ben-hadad escapes.

וַיִּמָּלֵט

wayyimmālēṭ

GROWS FROM

מלט

To slip away, escape, or get clear.

English “escaped” can sound like a completed rescue, but ⁨מלט⁩ names the act of getting clear. The same root appears as an urgent command in Genesis and as escape from pursuit here; it tells you he got away without promising how lasting that safety is.

ALSO GROWS

himmālēṭ: Escape for your life (Genesis 19:17).

הִמָּלֵט

The same root is used as a command while danger is still closing in; escape describes getting clear, not the end of the threat.

wayyimmālēṭ: David escaped Saul’s attack (1 Samuel 19:10).

וַיִּמָּלֵט

The repeated form shows the same act of getting away from an immediate pursuer, without declaring what follows.

וַיִּרְדְּפוּם

wayyirdĕphûm

GROWS FROM

רדף

To pursue, chase, or follow after.

“pursued” in this verse is wayyirdĕphûm. The root marks the direction of movement, not whether the pursuer succeeds. It describes Israel chasing the fleeing Syrians and can also describe pursuing peace; the target changes, while the going-after remains.

ALSO GROWS

wərādəfēhû: Pursue peace (Psalm 34:14).

וְרָדְפֵהוּ

The same root can describe chasing something life-giving, so pursuit itself does not determine the outcome or moral character of the scene.

rōḏəfay: Those who persecute me (Psalm 7:1).

רֹדְפַי

The KJV renders this root as “persecute” there and “pursued” here; both carry the motion of going after someone.

A person can get clear of immediate danger while the threatening situation is still unfolding.

And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
Genesis 19:17 · KJVEscape is urged while destruction is still imminent, so getting out is distinct from the danger being over.
And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin; but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.
1 Samuel 19:10 · KJVDavid gets clear of Saul’s attack that night; the danger is active, but its target gets away.
When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.
Acts 12:10 · KJVPeter passes through the iron gate while still in custody, finding an opening within the threatening situation.
And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin; but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.
1 Samuel 19:10 · KJV

The Hebrew verb translated “escaped” uses the same ⁨מלט⁩ root in both verses: David gets away from Saul’s attack, while Ben-hadad gets away from Israel’s pursuit. The shared root names getting clear; the surrounding scenes leave open how lasting that escape is.
