THE KEY
The darkness does not mark the edge of God’s presence; it is named as the place where he dwells.
THE MEANING
The LORD’s dwelling is present even where sight cannot make him out. The darkness remains darkness, yet the verse names it as his dwelling; what is hidden from your sight is not therefore empty.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that God’s presence is reliable only when everything is clear and visible.
THE ROOT
לִשְׁכֹּן
lishkon
GROWS FROM
שכן
to dwell, settle, or remain
“dwell” in this verse is lishkon. This root holds dwelling and a dwelling place together: the verb means to settle in, while related words name a dwelling or a neighbor who lives nearby. The LORD’s relation to the thick darkness is inhabitation, not a passing appearance.
ALSO GROWS
mishkan: dwelling place, tabernacle
מִשְׁכָּן
The related noun gives a place its name from the act of dwelling; the verse presents the darkness itself as where the LORD settles.
shakhen: neighbor, one who dwells nearby
שָׁכֵן
The root also links dwelling with nearness: to dwell is to remain close, not merely to appear for a moment.
THE PATTERN
God’s presence can be named within concealment, where sight cannot fully disclose what is there.
And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.THE THREAD
And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.Exodus uses the same Hebrew word, עֲרָפֶל (araphel), for the thick darkness into which Moses draws near, and says God is there. The repeated word makes the connection plain: darkness can name the hidden place of encounter, not God’s absence.
