What Does 1 Kings 8:19 Mean in the King James?
Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house unto my name.

THE KEY
The Hebrew words for “build” and “son” share a root: the house grows through the very life that comes forth to build it.
THE MEANING
The verse holds a limit and a continuation together: you do not build this house, yet its building proceeds through the son who comes forth from you. The house is built unto God’s name (שֵׁם, shem: name as nature), so it bears the character of the one it is for.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that a work is lost if you do not complete it yourself is undone here: the house still takes shape through what comes forth from you.
THE ROOT
בָּנָה
banah
GROWS FROM
בנה
b-n-h
To build, establish, or build up.
“build” in this verse is banah. The Hebrew word for “son” (בֵּן, ben: son) comes from this same root. The line joins generation and construction: the son is not merely a later builder but the continuation through whom the house takes shape.
ALSO GROWS
ben: son
בֵּן
This branch links the one who comes forth from the loins to the act of building the house.
binyan: building, structure
בִּנְיָן
This branch makes the shared root visible in the house’s construction.
THE PATTERN
The house that bears God’s name takes shape through living continuity, carrying the work beyond one person’s hands.
He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.THE THREAD
A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. The Hebrew verb translated “build” is בָּנָה (banah), the same root as בֵּן (ben: son). Psalm 127 opens the line further by placing the building in the LORD’s hands: the son is the builder, while the LORD remains the source of the house.
