What Does 1 Kings 8:9 Mean in the King James?
There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

THE KEY
After the exit from Egypt’s constriction, the ark holds only the covenant’s stone witness.
THE MEANING
Your passage out of constriction is held together with בְּרִית (berit, covenant): the ark holds the stone tablets, and the verse names them at the point of Israel’s departure. What you carry beyond a narrow place remains joined to a word that gives release a shape.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the idea that leaving bondage means leaving every bond behind: the verse places covenant at the center of life after the exit.
THE ROOT
בְּצֵאתָם
bəṣēʾtām
GROWS FROM
יצא
Go out, emerge, depart.
“came out” in this verse is bəṣēʾtām. The root names movement out, and the verse anchors the tablets to Israel’s going out from מִצְרַיִם (Mitzrayim, Egypt), associated here with צַר (tsar, narrow). The covenant’s witness is carried forward from that narrow place; the exit remains present in what the ark holds.
ALSO GROWS
yāṣāʾ: To go out or emerge.
יָצָא
This is the root’s basic motion, echoed in the verse’s account of departure.
yĕṣîʾāh: Going out, departure.
יְצִיאָה
It names the passage itself, the movement that links the covenant tablets to leaving Egypt.
yōṣēʾ: One who goes out; going out.
יוֹצֵא
The participle keeps the exit as an ongoing movement rather than a detached event.
הָאֲבָנִים
hāʾăvānîm
GROWS FROM
אבן
Stone.
The covenant is carried on stone: a durable witness held inside the ark. A Hebrew letter-play hears אֶבֶן (even, stone) through אָב (av, father) and בֵּן (ben, son), sharing the bet at the join; the stone’s name thus holds father and son together.
ALSO GROWS
ʾăvānîm: Stones.
אֲבָנִים
This plural form is the word used for the stone tablets, making their material part of the verse’s emphasis.
ʾavnē: Stones of; stone tablets of.
אַבְנֵי
The construct form links stone to what it bears, as the tablets bear the covenant witness.
מֹשֶׁה
Mosheh
GROWS FROM
משה
Draw out, especially from water.
Moses’ name is linked to מָשָׁה (māšāh, draw out); here, the one named by being drawn out places the covenant tablets in the ark. His name echoes the passage’s movement from what is constricting into what is carried forward.
ALSO GROWS
māšāh: To draw out.
מָשָׁה
This verb is the root behind Moses’ name and gives the name its nature.
məšîtîhû: I drew him out.
מְשִׁיתִיהוּ
This form appears in the naming of Moses and makes the name’s connection to being drawn out explicit.
THE PATTERN
Covenant testimony is carried in a vessel and then described as inscribed within living people.
And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee. And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the LORD commanded me.Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.THE THREAD
And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. The phrase בְּצֵאתָם (bəṣēʾtām, when they came out) in 1 Kings 8:9 comes from יצא (yatsaʾ, go out); Exodus 12:41 uses that same root for Israel’s departure from Egypt. The covenant witness inside the ark is thus tied to the going out the verse names.
