What Does 1 Samuel 13:20 Mean in the King James?
But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
When the hands that sharpen your tools belong to the power constraining you, dependence reaches from defense into daily work.
THE MEANING
Dependence can enter ordinary work: the power that constrains a people can become the keeper of the edges their livelihood requires. A sharpened tool sustains cultivation and can preserve the capacity to resist.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that control begins only with weapons; control of maintenance can bind a people through the very tools that keep them alive.
THE ROOT
לִלְטוֹשׁ
liltōš
GROWS FROM
לטש
L-Ṭ-Š
To sharpen or whet; in metalworking, to hammer or work metal.
“sharpen” in this verse is liltōš. English makes this sound like a simple maintenance errand, but this root also names the skilled metalworker who works iron and bronze. The same verb can whet a sword, showing how an edge can serve daily labor or violence, and how dependence on the sharpener can carry power.
ALSO GROWS
lōṭēš: A metalworker or one who sharpens metal; rendered “instructor” in Genesis 4:22.
לֹטֵשׁ
The related word ties sharpening to skilled metalwork, revealing that keeping an edge depends on access to a craft and its tools.
yiltōš: He whets or sharpens; used of a sword in Psalm 7:12.
יִלְטוֹשׁ
The same root sharpens a weapon there, making visible the double use of an edge that this verse places in another power’s hands.
THE PATTERN
Sharpening gives an edge its force, while its purpose determines whether that force strengthens, cultivates, or cuts.
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.THE THREAD
If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready. The same Hebrew root לָטַשׁ (latash, to sharpen or whet) appears here and in Psalm 7:12, where the object is a sword. The shared root shows that sharpening itself is open to different purposes: it can prepare tools for work or a weapon for violence.
