What Does 1 Samuel 14:34 Mean in the King James?
And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

THE KEY
The word translated “sin” means missing the mark, so eating with the blood becomes a crossing of the boundary around life.
THE MEANING
Need does not collapse every distinction: flesh is received as food while blood remains outside the meal. Crossing that boundary is named as a missing against the LORD. Urgency and restraint remain present together in nourishment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Hunger does not make blood ordinary food. The need for nourishment does not erase the boundary placed around the meal.
THE ROOT
חָטָא
chata
GROWS FROM
חטא
To miss, err, or go wrong.
“sin” in this verse is chata. The command uses חָטָא (chata, to miss or err) to describe eating with blood as a breach against the LORD. The same seed runs through חֵטְא (chet, missing) and חַטָּאת (chatta’t, offering for the missing), so the verse’s food boundary is also expressed as a relational failure before God.
ALSO GROWS
chet: Missing; sin.
חֵטְא
It preserves the same root idea in the noun for the breach the verse names.
chatta't: Offering for the missing; traditionally, sin offering.
חַטָּאת
This related form shows that the language of missing also names the offering associated with it.
THE PATTERN
Scripture marks blood as belonging to life, so eating is bounded even when flesh becomes food.
But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.THE THREAD
Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.Deuteronomy makes explicit what Samuel’s command leaves compressed: blood is life, and life is not to be eaten with the flesh. The boundary is woven into the act of eating itself.
