What Does 1 Samuel 16:11 Mean in the King James?
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

THE KEY
The whole room waits for the one still out with the sheep.
THE MEANING
When you are outside the room’s attention, this verse keeps that absence from being mistaken for irrelevance: the others wait until the youngest arrives. The one not yet counted is still part of what is unfolding.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that the gathering’s first count is complete, that the one still at work and out of sight does not matter, breaks here: Samuel will not let the others sit until he arrives.
THE ROOT
שִׁלְחָה
shilḥāh
GROWS FROM
שלח
Send forth, release, let go.
“Send” in this verse is shilḥāh. The command carries both sending David toward the gathering and releasing him from where he is tending sheep. English gives the action as a summons; the root also reveals the release that makes his arrival possible.
ALSO GROWS
shilluaḥ: Sending away; release.
שִׁלּוּחַ
This branch makes the movement in the command visible: David is released from the flock’s work and sent into the gathering.
shaliaḥ: Messenger; one sent.
שָׁלִיחַ
This branch keeps the sender and the sent person in view: David’s absence ends because Samuel directs that he be sent for.
THE PATTERN
A person working outside the scene is called from that task into a consequential role.
He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.THE THREAD
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.The same שָׁלַח (shalach, send or release) root appears in Samuel’s command and in the next verse’s report that David is sent for and brought in. The summons moves the absent shepherd into the scene where Samuel recognizes him.
