This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The valley is already part of the conflict before anyone crosses it: the space between two sides gives their opposition its visible shape.

The verse lets you recognize opposition before impact: both sides have a place, and the valley between them remains visible. The gap belongs to the same scene as the people on either side; distance does not make the tension unreal.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief that distance means no encounter is underway dissolves here: the two sides are already in opposition while the valley still separates them.

עֹמְדִים

ʿōmdîm

GROWS FROM

עמד

To stand, remain, or take one’s position.

“stood” in this verse is ʿōmdîm. The verse uses ⁨עֹמְדִים⁩ (ʿōmdîm, standing) for both groups, giving them the same posture before naming their different sides. From the same root, ⁨עַמּוּד⁩ (ʿammūd, pillar) names what stands upright; here, the repeated stance holds the scene in place while the valley remains between them.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāmad: To stand, remain.

עָמַד

⁨עֹמְדִים⁩ (ʿōmdîm) is a form of this verb, so both peoples are depicted as holding a position.

ʿammūd: Pillar, column.

עַמּוּד

A pillar is what stands upright; this branch makes the root’s stable posture concrete, echoing how both sides hold their places.

Scripture makes a boundary legible by showing what stands on either side and what occupies the space between.

And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
Exodus 14:22 · KJVThe waters mark two sides around a passage, making the middle the place where movement becomes possible.
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
Joshua 3:17 · KJVThe priests hold their place in the river while the people pass through the space between its banks.
Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
John 19:18 · KJVTwo figures occupy either side while Jesus is placed in the middle, making the arrangement itself part of the scene.
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
Joshua 3:17 · KJV

Joshua 3:17 uses ⁨עמד⁩ (ʿāmad, to stand) for the priests holding their place in the Jordan. In Samuel, the same root marks two positions across a valley; in Joshua, it marks a held place through which others pass.
