What Does 1 Samuel 17:47 Mean in the King James?
And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hands.

THE KEY
“Saveth” shares its root with יֵשׁוּעַ (Yeshua, deliverance): the LORD brings people out, while sword and spear cannot.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks to you now: deliverance belongs to the LORD, and sword and spear do not create it. The battle remains the LORD’s, even as the defeated enemy is given into human hands; the verse leaves the violence of victory visible without crediting weapons as its source.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the lie that superior force is what finally makes you safe.
THE ROOT
יְהוֹשִׁיעַ
yəhôšîaʿ
GROWS FROM
ישע
To deliver, rescue, and bring out of distress toward spaciousness.
“saveth” in this verse is yəhôšîaʿ. The verb comes from יָשַׁע (yasha, to deliver), the same seed that yields יְשׁוּעָה (yeshuah, deliverance) and the name יֵשׁוּעַ (Yeshua, deliverance). English can make “save” sound like victory by force; this root places the act in being brought out, while the verse names sword and spear as unable to produce it.
ALSO GROWS
yəšûʿāh: Deliverance; rescue.
יְשׁוּעָה
This noun names the movement held in the verb: deliverance comes through the LORD’s action, not through a weapon.
môšîaʿ: Deliverer; one who rescues.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
The same root names both the act of deliverance and the one who carries it out.
Yēšûaʿ: Deliverance; the name Yeshua.
יֵשׁוּעַ
The name carries the nature of the root: deliverance is bound to the one who brings people out.
THE PATTERN
When deliverance turns on God’s agency, the amount or kind of human force does not decide the outcome.
And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)THE THREAD
For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.“Save” repeats ישע (yasha, to deliver), making the root’s claim explicit: a sword cannot be the source of deliverance. Your verse names the LORD as deliverer; this one names the bow and sword as inadequate objects of trust.
