What Does 1 Samuel 17:9 Mean in the King James?
If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

THE KEY
The fight’s real wager is command over an entire people: whichever side loses becomes the victor’s servant.
THE MEANING
Here a single violent contest governs the fate of whole peoples. Whichever side loses is assigned to serve the winner, so the victor’s power extends beyond the combatant to everyone behind him. Killing and compelled service are the stated stakes.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the idea that victory ends with proving strength: here, victory claims a people’s service and places their lives under the victor’s command.
THE ROOT
לַעֲבָדִים
la'avadim
GROWS FROM
עבד
avad
work; serve
The same root appears in both halves of the verse: the losing people become servants, then serve the winner. Hebrew holds the claimed status and the compelled labor under one seed, making the wager a transfer of work and command.
ALSO GROWS
eved: servant; one who serves
עֶבֶד
This branch names the status assigned to the defeated people.
avodah: work, labor, service
עֲבֹדָה
This branch brings the consequence of that status into view: the defeated are made to labor for the victor.
THE PATTERN
Defeat becomes service: the power that prevails over a person or people claims their labor and obedience.
And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?THE THREAD
And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:Exodus 1:13 uses the same root for the act of making Israel serve. That echo clarifies the mechanism in this verse: servitude is not merely a name but labor imposed by the victor.
