THE KEY
Rescue begins when someone opens a narrow way down and out.
THE MEANING
A way out can begin with another person’s care and a passage narrow enough to leave unnoticed. Here, descending is part of escape; vulnerability and survival occupy the same movement. Deliverance appears as a concrete opening through danger.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that being lowered or needing help means defeat.
THE ROOT
וַיִּמָּלֵט
wayyimmālēṭ
GROWS FROM
מלט
malat
Slip away or escape; in a causative form, deliver someone or bring them safely out.
“escaped” in this verse is wayyimmālēṭ. The Hebrew form presents David as getting away, with the sense of being brought through to safety. Escape is not only his own movement: Michal’s act of lowering him is part of the same passage from danger to deliverance.
ALSO GROWS
himmālēṭ: Escape, get away (Niphal imperative).
הִמָּלֵט
This form from the same root names a person moving out of danger, echoing the escape described here.
himlîṭ: Deliver or bring safely out (Hiphil).
הִמְלִיט
The root can describe both escaping and someone bringing another person through to safety, as Michal does for David.
THE PATTERN
A dangerous passage becomes an exit when another person lowers someone through it.
Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.THE THREAD
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. The Hebrew root מלט (malat), meaning to escape or deliver, appears here in the word translated “escaped.” The broken snare opens this verse’s narrow escape into a wider image of release from what holds someone.
