What Does 1 Samuel 26:20 Mean in the King James?
Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The pursuit may make David look as small as a flea, but spilled blood does not become small with him.
THE MEANING
When you are under pursuit, another person’s power can make your life feel as small as a flea. The verse keeps the danger of bloodshed in view and places it in relation to the LORD’s presence. The size of the target does not make the threat trivial.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being treated as disposable makes your life disposable; the speaker still names his blood before the LORD.
THE ROOT
לְבַקֵּשׁ
ləvaqqēš
GROWS FROM
בקש
to seek, search for, or request
“seek” in this verse is ləvaqqēš. The Hebrew distinguishes בקש, seeking a target, from רדף, pursuing it. David’s comparison exposes how the king’s desire to find him becomes a chase that reduces a person to quarry.
ALSO GROWS
baqqashah: request, petition
בַּקָּשָׁה
The same consonants name a request: seeking can become a desire voiced toward another.
mevuqqash: sought-after, desired
מְבֻקָּשׁ
This branch names what the seeker wants, making the king’s pursuit a directed hunt rather than an abstract search.
יִרְדֹּף
yirdōf
GROWS FROM
רדף
to pursue, chase
“hunt” in this verse is yirdōf. This root names the chase itself: the king comes out to run David down. Beside בקש, it separates the aim of seeking from the force of pursuit.
ALSO GROWS
rodef: pursuer
רֹדֵף
The pursuer is the one carrying out the chase described in the verse.
redifah: pursuit
רְדִיפָה
This noun makes the chase a continuing action, matching David’s image of being hunted through the mountains.
THE PATTERN
A life treated as small quarry remains visible to God and carries real weight.
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.THE THREAD
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.David fears that his blood will fall to the earth as a king hunts him like a flea; Jesus names even a sparrow’s fall to the ground as occurring within the Father’s regard. The smallness of the hunted life does not place it beyond God’s notice.
