This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

By repeating the Hebrew verb for knowing, Achish makes an order sound like settled knowledge while David’s actual allegiance remains unsaid.

You hear the pressure of a future spoken as settled: you and those with you are expected to go out to fight. The direction is explicit, while consent and allegiance remain unspoken; David’s name still carries “beloved” inside that pressure.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Someone else’s certainty does not settle your allegiance; a declared path and inward consent are not the same thing.

יָדֹעַ תֵּדַע

yādōaʿ tēdaʿ

GROWS FROM

ידע

y-d-ʿ

Know, perceive, recognize through encounter

“Know thou assuredly” in this verse is yādōaʿ tēdaʿ. The Hebrew intensifies “know” by placing the infinitive absolute beside the same verb: literally, “knowing, you will know.” The knowing comes through what unfolds, yet the command speaks as if the outcome is already secured.

ALSO GROWS

yādaʿ: Know, perceive

יָדַע

The verb repeated in the verse carries knowing beyond information toward what is encountered.

daʿat: Knowledge, perception

דַּעַת

This noun carries the same root into a state of knowing, linking the command’s certainty to perception.

דָּוִד

Dāwid

GROWS FROM

דוד

d-w-d

Beloved; the beloved

David’s name carries the sense “beloved.” Here that nature stands beside the battle role assigned to him, leaving a charged gap between the name and the command.

ALSO GROWS

dōd: Beloved; also uncle or close male kin

דּוֹד

This is the word-family behind the beloved sense carried in David’s name.

dōdî: My beloved

דּוֹדִי

This form keeps the name’s root in the language of affection and belonging.

A future spoken with certainty is tested by what actually unfolds.

And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
Genesis 15:13 · KJVThe future is declared with the phrase “Know of a surety,” then described as an unfolding experience.
For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.
1 Kings 2:37 · KJVA warning states its future with certainty and ties that claim to a specific encounter.
Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
John 13:38 · KJVJesus names Peter’s coming denial before it happens, and the claim’s meaning becomes visible through what unfolds.
And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.
1 Samuel 28:2 · KJV

David answers Achish with the same doubled Hebrew verb, ⁨יָדֹעַ תֵּדַע⁩ (yādōaʿ tēdaʿ, “knowing, you will know”). The order’s certainty returns as a claim whose meaning depends on what David actually does, making the tension audible in the next verse.
