What Does 1 Samuel 30:22 Mean in the King James?

Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

They turn “we rescued it” into “it belongs to us,” making participation in the battle the boundary of belonging.

You can watch a shared rescue narrow into private entitlement: the fighters claim the goods because the others did not go with them. The others are left only with their wives and children to take away and depart, while the recovered provision is withheld. The verse makes visible how belonging is constricted when taking part in danger becomes the price of sharing what has been rescued.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that those who did not go into battle have no rightful share in what the community recovers.

הִצַּלְנוּ

hiṣṣalnu

GROWS FROM

נצל

To rescue or deliver; in some forms, to strip away or plunder.

“recovered” in this verse is hiṣṣalnu. The Hebrew phrase is “the spoil that we have rescued”: ⁨נצל⁩ (natsal) names the act of pulling something out of another’s grasp. The “we” makes that act sound like a title deed, though the root itself names the rescue, not an exclusive right to what was rescued.

ALSO GROWS

wayyaṣṣēl: He rescued or recovered.

וַיַּצֵּל

In 1 Samuel 30:18, the same root describes David recovering what was taken and rescuing his wives, holding people and goods within one act of rescue.

weniṣṣaltem: You shall strip away or plunder.

וְנִצַּלְתֶּם

In Exodus 3:22, this root is rendered “spoil” Egypt; the same consonants can describe what is taken out of an oppressor’s hold.

Shared provision becomes communal when its gains reach beyond the people who directly gathered them.

For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.
1 Samuel 30:24 · KJVThe share belongs equally to those at battle and those who remain with the supplies.
And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.
Exodus 16:18 · KJVThe gathered amount does not determine who has enough; provision meets each person’s need.
But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:
2 Corinthians 8:14 · KJVAbundance moves across need so that sharing, rather than individual possession, shapes the community.
And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives.
1 Samuel 30:18 · KJV

The Hebrew behind “we have recovered” here is ⁨נצל⁩ (natsal, rescue or pull away), the same root used when David “recovered” what was taken and “rescued” his wives. The shared root places the goods and the people within one rescue, exposing the men’s attempt to claim the goods as “ours” while sending the families away.
