King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Within “were taken captive,” the root שׁבה holds both the family seized and the act of seizing them, keeping the violence present inside the loss.
THE MEANING
When the place that holds your life is destroyed, loss can reach the people closest to you at the same time. The city is burned, and the wives, sons, and daughters are taken; the verse holds both devastations together without softening either.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that home guarantees safety: the city itself is burned, and the families are taken.
THE ROOT
נִשְׁבּוּ
nishbu
GROWS FROM
שׁבה
to take captive
“were taken captives” in this verse is nishbu. The form here is passive: they are taken captive, while שָׁבָה names the act of taking captive and שׁוֹבֶה names the captor. The same consonants keep the seized family and the human agency that seizes them within one word-family; the violence is not left ownerless.
ALSO GROWS
shavah: to take captive
שָׁבָה
This active verbal form names the act behind the verse’s passive wording, making the seizure legible within the same root.
shoveh: one who takes captive; a captor
שׁוֹבֶה
This participle names the one who seizes, keeping the captor present alongside those taken.
THE PATTERN
Violence can destroy shelter and take the people within it in the same rupture.
And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. And their houses shall be turned unto others, with their fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD.As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.THE THREAD
And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.The next verse keeps the loss in full view: the people grieve for their children, and their grief turns against David. Its final clause brings a response into the same devastation without making the losses smaller.
