THE KEY
Eli’s heart is already trembling before the messenger arrives, so the coming loss reaches him inwardly before it becomes the city’s cry.
THE MEANING
You can sit in outward stillness while your heart is already trembling over what is at stake. When the report reaches the city, private alarm becomes a public cry.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that a still posture means a peaceful heart: Eli sits, but he is already shaken.
THE ROOT
חָרֵד
ḥārēḏ
GROWS FROM
חרד
ḥ-r-d
To tremble, quake, or be alarmed.
“trembled” in this verse is ḥārēḏ. The Hebrew makes Eli’s heart itself the subject of the trembling: his alarm is already present as he watches for the ark. The same root can describe one person shaking or a whole company trembling, opening a path from Eli’s inward fear to the city’s cry.
ALSO GROWS
ḥărādāh: Trembling, dread, or alarm.
חֲרָדָה
This noun names the alarm that is already active in Eli before the messenger speaks.
ḥārēḏ: Trembling or alarmed; one who trembles.
חָרֵד
This form shows that the root describes a state of being shaken, not only a momentary outward movement.
THE PATTERN
When stability gives way, alarm appears as trembling and can spread from one person to a whole company.
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,THE THREAD
And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed. The same root appears in Isaac’s trembling as the consequences of the blessing become undeniable. Isaac shakes after the news; Eli’s heart is already trembling as he waits for it.
