What Does 1 Samuel 6:12 Mean in the King James?
And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
A straight path does not require a silent traveler.
THE MEANING
Your grief can be audible while your direction remains clear. The cows low as they go, yet they do not turn aside; the sound travels with the movement rather than steering it. The destination, Beth-shemesh (בֵּית־שֶׁמֶשׁ, bêt-šemeš, “house of the sun”), is named without the journey’s cry being silenced.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that grief means you are off course, or that you must silence pain before you can move.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשַּׁרְנָה
vayyisharnāh
GROWS FROM
י־ש־ר
y-sh-r
To be straight, level, or right.
“straight” in this verse is vayyisharnāh. The word points to course: the cows head toward their destination while their lowing remains audible. Straightness here can hold a cry; it does not require silence.
ALSO GROWS
yāšār: Straight, level, or upright.
יָשָׁר
This branch shows that the verse’s straightness describes the direction they take.
yōšer: Uprightness or what is straight.
יֹשֶׁר
It carries the root’s sense of a course that holds true, even while the traveler makes a sound.
בַּדֶּרֶךְ עַל־דֶּרֶךְ
badéreḵ ʿal-déreḵ
GROWS FROM
ד־ר־ך
d-r-k
To tread or step; a way is a trodden course.
“way / highway” in this verse is badéreḵ ʿal-déreḵ. The road is named twice in the Hebrew, giving the movement a definite track. The root connects a way with the act of treading it: direction is something traveled, not merely imagined.
ALSO GROWS
déreḵ: A road, way, or course.
דֶּרֶךְ
This is the road the cows follow toward Beth-shemesh.
dāraḵ: To tread or set foot.
דָּרַךְ
The root links the way to the steps that carry a traveler along it.
THE PATTERN
A way is preserved by holding its direction through pressure and distraction.
Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.THE THREAD
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. The verb rendered “direct” comes from יָשַׁר (yāšar, “be straight/make straight”), the same root behind “straight” in this verse. Here, direction and the sound of the journey can coexist.
