What Does 1 Timothy 4:2 Mean in the King James?
Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The lie does not merely hide the truth from others; it brands the speaker’s own inner witness.
THE MEANING
When a lie is spoken under the cover of a performance, the conscience is pictured as cauterized by the heat of that speech. The deception leaves its mark within the speaker; the inner witness is not untouched by what the mouth presents.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that deception only affects whoever hears it: the verse says the speaker’s own inner witness takes the mark.
THE ROOT
καυτηριάζω
kautēriazō
GROWS FROM
καίω
kaiō
Burn; the root carries the image of being marked by heat.
“seared” in this verse is kautēriazō. The word grows from the language of burning and evokes an instrument used to cauterize or brand. Its image is not mere silence: the conscience is marked by the heat of the false speech it accompanies.
ALSO GROWS
kaiō: Burn or set alight.
καίω
This is the basic burning image beneath “seared.”
kautērion: A cauterizing or branding iron.
καυτήριον
The instrument makes vivid the verse’s image of an inner witness marked by heat.
συνείδησις
syneidēsis
GROWS FROM
οἶδα (oida), with σύν (syn)
Know together; an inner knowing-with.
“Conscience” can sound like a private faculty, but syneidēsis carries the sense of an inner knowing-with, an awareness alongside what one does. The verse places the lie beside the speaker’s own witness, not only the listener’s judgment.
ALSO GROWS
oida: Know or perceive.
οἶδα
This supplies the knowing at the center of the word for conscience.
synoida: Know with oneself; be conscious of.
σύνοιδα
This related form shows conscience as awareness accompanying one’s own actions.
THE PATTERN
What the mouth performs in falsehood reaches inward and shapes the conscience, while truthful speech joins the spoken word to the heart.
He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.THE THREAD
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)Romans names the conscience as a witness; here that same inner knowing is pictured as branded by false speech. The shared Greek word makes the contrast sharp: the witness is present, yet the verse depicts it as marked by what it accompanies.
