THE KEY
The whole assembly moves toward a tent whose name carries the idea of an appointed meeting with God.
THE MEANING
You are inside a scene of shared approach: the gathered people move toward the appointed meeting place. The tent made in the wilderness stands at the center of their gathering, showing encounter as something approached together.
THE ROOT
אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד הָאֱלֹהִים
ʾōhel mōʿēd hāʾĕlōhîm
GROWS FROM
יעד
yaʿad
To appoint or designate; by extension, to meet at an appointed place or time.
“tabernacle of the congregation of God” in this verse is ʾōhel mōʿēd hāʾĕlōhîm. The phrase’s meeting word comes from the root also used when God says, “I will meet with thee.” The tent’s name holds the purpose of the place: an appointed encounter.
ALSO GROWS
moed: An appointed time, meeting, or appointed place.
מוֹעֵד
This is the word in “tabernacle of the congregation”; its root makes the place’s meeting function part of its name.
wənoʿadtî: “I will meet,” from Exodus 25:22.
וְנוֹעַדְתִּי
The same root turns the appointed meeting into a promise of meeting: the tent’s name and God’s words share one seed.
THE PATTERN
Encounter takes shape as people gather around a place appointed for meeting with God.
And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.THE THREAD
And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. The word translated “meet” comes from יעד (yaʿad), the root beneath moed, “appointed meeting,” in the tent’s name. The connection reveals that the tent is not only where the people gather; meeting is built into what the place is called.
