THE KEY
Preparation takes shape in two movements: establish a place for what is sacred, then stretch shelter around it.
THE MEANING
In your life now, this verse names a movement: what is sacred is given an established place, and shelter is stretched around it. David (דָּוִד, Dāwīd, from דּוֹד, dōd, “beloved”) brings the ark into Jerusalem (יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, Yerushalayim), whose name carries shalom (שָׁלוֹם, shālôm, “wholeness”) in the sense of the two wholenesses. Belovedness and wholeness frame a dwelling that begins as prepared space and becomes shelter.
THE ROOT
הֵכִין
hēkîn
GROWS FROM
כון
kun
To be firm or established; in this form, to make ready by establishing.
“Prepared” grows from a root about being established: David makes the place ready by setting it in order. The same root forms makon, a fixed place or dwelling, so preparation and habitation share the idea of a place made firm.
ALSO GROWS
māḵôn: A fixed place, dwelling, or foundation.
מָכוֹן
It links David’s prepared place to the idea of a settled dwelling.
yākôn: Will be established; will stand firm.
יָכוֹן
This branch shows the firmness beneath the act of making a place ready.
הֵטָה
hēṭâ
GROWS FROM
נטה
nāṭāh
To stretch, extend, spread, or incline.
“pitched” in this verse is hēṭâ. The Hebrew verb carries the sense of stretching something out, which gives the tent a physical shape: shelter extended over a prepared place. The same root can describe an attentive turning or inclining, joining outward extension with directed attention.
ALSO GROWS
nōṭeh: Extends or stretches outward.
נוֹטֶה
Isaiah uses this form for the heavens stretched out like a curtain, making the tent’s sheltering motion visible on a larger scale.
haṭṭēh: Turn or lean toward.
הַטֵּה
Psalm 17 uses this form for inclining an ear, showing the same root’s movement toward what is being attended to.
THE PATTERN
Divine presence is encountered as it fills or inhabits a dwelling.
Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.THE THREAD
But I have built an house of habitation for thee, and a place for thy dwelling for ever. The phrase “a place for thy dwelling” uses makon (מָכוֹן, māḵôn), formed from the same root כון (kun) behind “prepared.” The root connects David’s made-ready place with a dwelling: what is established for the ark can become a place of habitation.
