What Does 2 Chronicles 14:6 Mean in the King James?
And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.

THE KEY
What English calls “rest” twice is two movements in Hebrew: a land made quiet and a ruler settled by the LORD, creating the opening in which fortified cities can rise.
THE MEANING
You meet peace here as more than a pause: the land is quiet, the LORD grants the ruler rest, and fortified cities take shape within that opening. Safety is something that can be built in the conditions rest gives.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that security can be built only during danger: the cities are fortified while the land is quiet and war is absent.
THE ROOT
הֵנִיחַ
hēnîaḥ
GROWS FROM
נוח
נוח (nûaḥ): settle, come to rest.
“given him rest” in this verse is hēnîaḥ. This root makes rest a settling, and here the LORD is the one who brings it about. The quiet is not merely an empty interval; it becomes the ground on which fortified cities can be built.
ALSO GROWS
mĕnûḥāh: rest, resting place
מְנוּחָה
Rest becomes a place to inhabit, illuminating how the ruler’s granted rest supports durable shelter.
mĕnôaḥ: rest, resting place
מְנוֹחַ
This related form also names a settled place, echoing the verse’s movement from respite toward fortified dwelling.
שָׁקְטָה
shāqĕṭāh
GROWS FROM
שקט
שָׁקַט (shāqaṭ): become quiet, undisturbed.
“had rest” in this verse is shāqĕṭāh. The land’s quiet and the LORD’s gift of rest are expressed through different Hebrew roots, though English gives both the word “rest.” One names the public condition; the other names the settling the LORD gives the ruler.
ALSO GROWS
sheqeṭ: quiet, stillness
שֶׁקֶט
This noun names the undisturbed condition of the land that makes the years without war possible.
hishqîṭ: quiet, calm
הִשְׁקִיט
This causative form shows the same root at work in making something quiet, sharpening the verse’s distinction between quiet conditions and granted rest.
בָּנָה
bānāh
GROWS FROM
בנה
בנה (bānāh): build, establish.
“built” in this verse is bānāh. The root connects the act of building with the structures that remain from it. Here, peace takes visible form in fortified cities, so rest is not portrayed as inactivity.
ALSO GROWS
mivneh: structure, building
מִבְנֶה
The built structure is the formed result of the same root’s act of building.
bĕniyyāh: building, construction
בְּנִיָּה
This noun names the process itself, bringing the verse’s protective construction into view.
THE PATTERN
God-given rest becomes ground for secure dwelling and durable building.
And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.THE THREAD
And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.Genesis describes the ark with וַתָּנַח (vattānaḥ, came to rest), a form of נוח (nûaḥ, settle or rest), the same root as the LORD’s giving rest here. Both verses show rest as a settling after danger; in this verse, that settled interval opens space for fortified cities.
