What Does 2 Chronicles 18:33 Mean in the King James?
And a certain man drew a bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the joints of the harness: therefore he said to his chariot man, Turn thine hand, that thou mayest carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The wound arrives between what is joined: the Hebrew word for the armor’s “joints” comes from a root meaning to cling or hold fast.
THE MEANING
The shot has no chosen target, yet it reaches the gap between the armor’s pieces. The king orders his charioteer to turn aside and says, “I am wounded”; the verse keeps the body’s exposure visible beneath its covering.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that being fully armored means being unreachable dissolves here: the protection has a seam, and the wound is real.
THE ROOT
הַדְּבָקִים
ha-devaqim
GROWS FROM
דבק
To cling, adhere, or hold fast.
The KJV’s “joints” sounds like a neutral seam, but the Hebrew word comes from the root for clinging or adhering. The arrow enters between the parts where protection holds together: the point of joining is also the point of exposure.
ALSO GROWS
davaq: Cling, cleave, hold fast.
דָּבַק
The verb describes an attached bond; here its related noun names the armor’s joining points.
u-vo tidbaq: And to him you shall cleave (Deuteronomy 10:20).
וּבוֹ תִדְבָּק
The same root can name sustained attachment; in this verse it marks the place where separate pieces meet.
לְתֻמּוֹ
le-tummo
GROWS FROM
תמם
To be complete, whole, or finished; the related noun can convey integrity or simplicity.
“at a venture” in this verse is le-tummo. The phrase describes the archer’s act as simple or uncalculated, not as a deliberate shot at the king. Its root also names integrity and wholeness, setting the unplanned shot beside an outcome that finds the armor’s opening.
ALSO GROWS
tam: Whole, blameless, or simple.
תָּם
This related form carries the shade of straightforwardness that can inform “at a venture.”
tamim: Whole, complete, without defect.
תָּמִים
This branch shows the root’s sense of wholeness beneath renderings such as “integrity” and “simplicity.”
THE PATTERN
What appears unplanned can still fall within a larger order and reach a precise outcome.
The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.THE THREAD
Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. The Chronicles phrase לְתֻמּוֹ (le-tummo, “in his simplicity”) shares the root תמם (tamam, “to be whole”) with תֹּם (tom, “integrity”) in this verse. The shared root brings out the shade of simplicity or uncalculated intent in the archer’s act, even as its outcome finds the armor’s opening.
