The Hebrew phrase for “in his stead” also means “beneath him,” so the verse pictures a new king occupying the place the departing king leaves.

A life reaches its end, and the kingship does not end with it: Jehoram takes up the place Jehoshaphat leaves. Burial and succession stand together, the body returns to its fathers while public authority continues in another.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a person’s death makes everything they carried disappear: the person is buried, while the kingship passes on.

תַּחְתָּיו

taḥtāw

GROWS FROM

תחת

t-ḥ-t

Under, beneath; by extension, in the place of.

The word rendered “stead” carries the spatial sense “beneath him.” English gives the succession but hides the word’s image of one place being occupied by another.

ALSO GROWS

taḥat: Under, beneath; also in place of.

תַּחַת

This is the preposition at the heart of “in his stead,” holding physical position and succession together.

taḥton: Lower, below.

תַּחְתּוֹן

This related form preserves the root’s spatial sense of what lies beneath.

וַיִּמְלֹךְ

wayyimlokh

GROWS FROM

מלך

m-l-k

To reign or rule as king.

“reigned” in this verse is wayyimlokh. The verb for Jehoram’s rule grows from the same root as the words for king and kingdom. The ruler changes; the kingship remains as the role he takes up.

ALSO GROWS

melekh: King.

מֶלֶךְ

The person who bears the office is named by the same root as the act of reigning.

mamlakhah: Kingdom, realm.

מַמְלָכָה

The same root names the larger realm that continues beyond an individual ruler.

A role can outlast the person who held it when another takes up the place left open.

And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.
1 Kings 22:50 · KJVThe same death, burial, and succession sequence shows the kingship continuing in a new bearer.
Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah.
2 Chronicles 26:1 · KJVA son takes the place of his father as king, making succession visible as the transfer of a role.
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
2 Timothy 2:2 · KJVWhat one person carries is entrusted onward through others, continuing across successive bearers.
Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah.
2 Chronicles 26:1 · KJV

The Hebrew uses the same word, ⁨תַּחַת⁩ (taḥat), for “in the room of” Amaziah that 2 Chronicles 21:1 uses for “in his stead.” The repeated root lets you hear succession as one person taking the place another leaves.
