What Does 2 Chronicles 22:1 Mean in the King James?
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The youngest becomes king because violence has already decided who is left to choose.
THE MEANING
Power settles onto the son who remains after violence removes the elder sons, and the city’s choice does not erase what made room for him. The reign begins carrying the fracture of its beginning.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the assumption that a successor’s rise means the transition is orderly: here, Ahaziah is made king because the elder sons have been killed.
THE ROOT
הַקָּטֹן
haqqāṭōn
GROWS FROM
קטן
To be small or little.
The word for “youngest” is formed from the language of smallness. Ahaziah is the least by birth order, yet he becomes the one on whom the royal line rests after the elder sons are killed.
ALSO GROWS
qāṭōn: Small, little, or youngest.
קָטֹן
It keeps birth order and smallness together: the youngest is also the least in age.
qāṭan: To be small or diminish.
קָטַן
The same root can describe becoming less, echoing the emptied line in which the youngest remains.
וַיַּמְלִיכוּ
wayyamlîḵû
GROWS FROM
מלך
To reign or be king; in this form, to cause someone to reign or make king.
“made king” in this verse is wayyamlîḵû. The act of making Ahaziah king shares its root with “king” and “kingship.” The inhabitants are not merely witnesses to succession: they are the ones who confer the office on the son left standing.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: King.
מֶלֶךְ
The person who receives the office grows from the same root as the act that installs him.
malkhut: Kingship or kingdom.
מַלְכוּת
The root links the act of choosing a ruler to the wider order his rule occupies.
malakh: To reign.
מָלַךְ
The same root holds the installed king and the act of reigning together.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שלם
To be whole or complete.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries the language of shalom, wholeness. The city’s name holds wholeness while this succession bears the fracture left by violence.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, well-being.
שָׁלוֹם
It brings the city’s language of wholeness into view beside the violence surrounding the succession.
shalem: Whole, complete.
שָׁלֵם
It shares the root’s sense of completeness, sharpening the contrast with a royal line cut down.
THE PATTERN
When a place of authority is left vacant, a community’s act of choosing fills it, and the choice bears the conditions that opened the place.
And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.THE THREAD
And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself. Both verses use qaton, “small” or “youngest,” at the point where a royal family is cut down. Ahaziah is the youngest made king after his elder brothers are killed; Jotham is the youngest left alive after his brothers are slain, so the shared root ties smallness to the surviving hinge of succession.
